If you have read my Penang travel posts, you would already know that I stayed in Holidayinn hotel in Batu ferringhi. Its high time I write a review about my stay there. I always try to write honest reviews about my experiences because I want to help the travel enthusiast to plan their trip in a better way and that’s the whole purpose of starting this blog few years ago.
I stayed in HolidayInn, Batu Ferringhi, Penang for 7 nights and 8 days, I know that’s a quite a long hotel stay. I booked my stay via booking.com and got a good deal for 7 nights. I was all excited about my stay in Holiday Inn for 7 nights as I got a premium hotel stay in a good price. So you think my stay was good? Yeah, over all it was good stay but have some bad pointers too. This hotel has two wings, one is beach wing (old one), tower wing (new one). Beach wing is situated on beach side of Batu Ferringhi and tower wing is on other side of the road. Both the wings are connected by a bridge. I stayed in beach wing. I actually made a booking for tower wing but I wanted beach wing after reaching there and the receptionist was kind enough to accommodate my request.
Holiday Inn Resort , Penang – Review
Room was clean and fine. Nothing great about the room as one has a certain expectation out of premium hotel chain. These rooms also need refurbishing and they can actually start their fixing job from changing curtains maybe. I was given a hill view room, nothing great about the view. Room was good enough to stay for 7 nights but like I said it’s just an ordinary clean room for a premium brand. Unfortunately, I didn’t click any room pictures for the reference.
One of the reason I booked Holiday inn was reading their much hyped description about their Indian chef but I was disappointed to the way beyond my expectation. I am a choosy eater and not much into food adventures, I was very happy to see an Indian chef on their website and I was like, at least I get some basic dhal, roti, rice to eat in my stay in Malaysia, I am sure all Indian travellers can relate to my sentiment. I ordered some bhendi fry (Brinjal fry), dhal , roti and rice for my lunch on arrival. To my surprise, everything was served in 10 minutes, that explains a lot. Everything was frozen and heated upon the order placed and served. If food was great this would have gone unnoticed.
Next day, I placed my lunch order at around 2.25 and chef refused to take the order because he leaves kitchen at 2.30. Technically, I am 5 minutes early and he cant refuse my order. More than that, I am there for holidaying, if I have to stick on to the rules, I would go to my grand ma’s home for vacation, not all the way to Penang, spending lots of money. Chef’s attitude towards in house guests is not acceptable for a premium hotel chain brand. Anyway, because of chef’s attitude, I got a chance to explore some good food places around and also there are plenty of Indian food options for travellers here. There breakfast spread or dinner spread is nothing great to mention. I took their Friday special buffet and I would rate this as just average.
What I liked about staying in Holiday inn?
Easy access to beach, that’s the best part of my stay. I spent all night, sitting on beach bed watching the sky and the waves. Massages are my favorite holiday activity and I had chance to get foot reflexology inside the resort and went to a body massage to next door at the beach side.
Night market is right in front of the hotel and Its an interesting experience to watch the market come live in the evening.
Like I said, over all stay was good but not up to the premium brand chain hotel’s expectation. Chef and food is main mood spoiler of this stay.
Do I recommend?
As there is nothing great to experience, consider this hotel only If you get your stay for cheap , ( I paid MYR 2000 for 7nights ). If you have a good budget for your stay, then do not choose this, as its not a luxurious one. If visiting Penang’s attractions tops your holiday list, then consider staying towards George town or Gurney drive. I only give average ratings for Holiday Inn Penang.
