I spent most of my Malaysia time in Penang just being beach bum on Batu Ferringhi beach. I am attracted towards sea and I think I end up on the beach in search of reason behind my love for that part of the nature. Anyway, I love being near sea, I love my beach time and that’s all matters.
I stayed for 8 days in Penang and I didn’t do much of touristy thing apart from visiting few places which I could have covered it in a day. For me travelling is all about feeling the place in my own way and absorbing myself with the flow around the place and just being me in an unknown soil.
All You Need To Know About Batu Ferringhi, Penang
Visiting a popular monument or popular place is not my idea of creating memories. I can just sit on some run down café and read a book for many days or lie down on a beach, contemplating whether to get into the water or not for another few more days. I silently enjoy watching all sort of people around me and I try to relate my life back home with these people’s life and these are the kind of memories I carry back home.
Let’s get back to Batu Ferringhi beach now. This stretch is full of beach side resorts, you get plenty of option as per your budget. I stayed in Holiday Inn, nothing great to mention about the hotel, it’s just an ordinary stay under a premium brand name. (I will keep my stay experience rant to some other time). Why to choose Batu Ferringhi for stay?
If you just want to enjoy your ‘me time’ and have a quite (not so quite) holiday, then Batu Ferringhi is your choice. This is not close to any of the major Penang’s attractions and it’s quite a long ride to George Town from here. I don’t advice you to stay in Batu Ferringhi – if your idea of holidaying is visiting attractions around Penang. I also heard, it’s a great place for family vacation as there are many kids’ theme attractions around. This is not one of the best beaches in Malaysia but if Penang is in your mind and you too have my taste of holidaying then this is the place for you.
What did I do in Batu Ferringhi?
I spent most of my day time in Penang, just relaxing on the beach. Holiday Inn has its own beach entrance and that’s the only thing I enjoyed in staying at holiday inn. I did a massage center hopping and took plenty of massages for 8days. Don’t expect any professional masseurs here, there are few massage centers on the beach available for 30RM for 30 minutes massage and 60 RM for an hour massage (you can negotiate too). My favorite massage place was on the beach between star bucks and holiday inn (don’t remember the place name, but easy to find), this place is beach facing and its very relaxing to take massage here during morning before crowd starts coming on beach or in the evening.
My evenings went by watching sunset and its one of the best part of my stay here. It’s fun to watch different shades of people- Usually you get to see family crowd enjoying their family time, mothers screaming at kids, parents taking their kids on horse ride, little grown up kids trying out water sports and amidst of all these chaos, some couple being oblivion to all these and enjoying their romantic sunset time and also few travelers like me, sitting silently and observing all these under one sun set and lost in their own imaginations.
I didn’t attempt to get into the sea water as it wasn’t appealing and water is polluted.
You can take trishaw ride in the evening and see the vibrantly lit up night market but these trishaw riders are real rip off compare to other side Penang. My advice is- before hopping on to trishaw, fix the price with rider.
Night market at Batu Ferringhi is a major attraction here, by evening around 6 pm stall arises and open until mid night 12-1pm depending on weather condition. I will give more details in another post about night market. Read more about Night Market HERE
I went couple of nights towards George Town in the night, it’s pretty safe to get back all alone in taxis at night but it costs quite a lot and it is 40-60 minutes drive depending on traffic, so I decided to stay back on Batu Ferringhi for rest of my nights.
Where to Eat
I tried few restaurants and my favorite was Ferringhi garden. Food is good, nice ambience and very clean place. I will write more about it in another review post. Update- Read more HERE
It’s worth a visit to Batu Ferringhi if you are planning for Penang holiday. Though I didn’t get inside the water, nevertheless I enjoyed my beach time.
I shot this #TimeLapse video from my iPhone when I was wandering in Batu Ferringhi beach, Penang, Malaysia. I just placed my iPhone behind this beautiful flower to capture the sunset while I was lost watching the nature at its best.
